Austin City Council withdraws plans to create music department

Saturday, August 8th, 2009

aLIVE_stickersSo here I am on vacation, looking for the results from the vote on the creation of Austin music department, a city office that would support the local music scene, and not finding much. Then I see a Statesman blurb about votes from the August 6 meeting, with no elaboration: Withdrew an item related to the creation of a city music department. I’m not totally sure what “withdrawn” means and whether or not this is a permanent blow to the recommendations of the Live Music Task Force.

So is that it? No more delays and wavering in the face of police union pressure? It looks like the City Council finally gave in and let the police union bend them over for good.

If anyone has any more information about the City Council meeting on Aug 6, please post it in the comment. I’ll be searching around for more info as well.

Taking bets – will the vote on the Music Office happen?

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

The previous vote by the City Council on the creation of an Austin Music Office was delayed after the police union threatened to rescind its offer to delay contractual raises. The move by the union would save the city about 5 million dollars. They protested the creation of the Music Office as apparently $330,000 is too much to spend to support and foster a billion dollar local industry. With the recent residential development downtown, music venues are facing a new set of challenges yet don’t have a clear voice in local government.

The City Council agreed to delay the vote and the new vote is scheduled for today. Ever the skeptic, I am taking bets on whether or not the vote will take place. I suspect that even if the vote does happen, they will vote to not create the music office.

What do you think? Will Austin’s local government finally realize that live music isn’t a self-sustaining industry? Will they realize that a small investment now could help incubate new talent and support the existing music scene?
