Ticket Giveaway: 2 nights of Portugal. The Man

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

You want them? We got them. A pair of tickets to each night of Portugal. The Man at The Parish. It’s a two night event with the Alaska indie trio, with The Dig and Port O’ Brien as a supporting cast.

The guys just released their latest album, American Ghetto, yesterday and are currently touring. This is something like their sixth release in five years. Go over to the blog Music Under Fire for a free download of “People Say”.

Now, on to the tickets! This time you have options. Leave a comment on this post, send us a tweet, comment/message on Facebook, etc. Basically, use your social media outlet of choice (expect MySpace. Screw MySpace) to let me know you want the tickets (and which night you want to attend). But hurry, you only have until 3pm today! I’ll pick a winner at random…or the person that seems to want it the most.

Go to it!

Roaries voting extended until tomorrow

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

Voting in The Roaries, Austin’s OTHER Music Awards, has been extended until 11:59pm Tuesday night. We have received almost 1000 ballots so far and more are coming in every day. Make sure you get your votes in today or tomorrow; the top three nominees in most categories are within 1-2% of each other. We would hate for a nominee to lose by one vote, so we decided to keep the voting going for a couple days more.

If you haven’t yet voted, then what are you waiting for? It’s quick and easy, just clicky the link!

Then be sure to stop by The Parish on Thursday night for the official Roaries Award Show. It’s right after work, from 5 – 9 pm, and we’ll have some free libations for you to enjoy courtesy of Treaty Oak Rum (and maybe some surprise drinks too!). Sharkweek and Prepmode will be keeping the tunes going, pausing only for us to hand out awards and premiere some sweet videos from the nominees. Chris over at Republic of Austin has been been busting his butt scheduling, shooting, and editing the videos.

Then stick around! Everyone who attends the Roaries Award Show gets FREE ENTRY into A Night of Daft Punk & The Clash with DJ Thibault.

WOXY Presents: Elvis Perkins in Dearland

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

Come out and brave Friday the 13th by enjoying the indie-folk sounds of Elvis Perkins in Dearland. The New York four-piece released their new EP, Doomsday, in October and will be making a tour stop at The Parish along with Alabama’s AA Bondy. While the music itself isn’t scary, the Friday the 13th timing is apt. Elvis Perkins is the son of Anthony Perkins who played Norman Bates in Psycho.

Clickify the show poster below to grab tickets. Tickets are $14.

Straight from my good friends at Wikipedia:

Known for their wide range of dynamics and eclectic instrumentation, Elvis Perkins in Dearland have frequently drawn comparisons to Leonard Cohen, Neutral Milk Hotel, Buddy Holly and The Band. The band formed in Providence, RI around 2004 when Elvis moved to the East Coast upon completing Ash Wednesday, although the members have been friends and collaborators for many years. The band are currently based out of the Hudson River Valley of New York State.

Perkins has stated that he “loathe[s] the term singer-songwriter, because it reminds me of open-mic nights and coffee shops and lazy chord structures,” subsequently stating that he would rather be referred to as “a recording artist.”

Shakeup at The Parish

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

the_parish.jpgI don’t have a lot of information, but I do know that Gina Chung of FlipScene has been tapped to take over as the Talent Buyer at The Parish. She replaces Brynn Scott. I’m also hearing rumblings that other personnel changes are taking place.

The Parish is currently undergoing a face lift, with new lights, wall treatments, a lighting desk, and an updated sound board. I was by there a couple weeks ago to check it out, and the lighting alone will be kickass. The renovations should be completed by the first week of December.

Unfortunately, the face lift comes with a “cleaning up” of the show calendar. Several confirmed and tentative shows at The Parish are now being canceled, forcing promoters and bands to find other venues. I suspect this signals that The Parish will now be more selective in booking shows, but time will tell.

The Parish is a premiere Austin music venue with superb sound. Hopefully, it is still within reach for mid-level local bands and these behind the scenes changes are the right move.
