I am a slacker. Jen Leduc’s birthday was a couple weeks ago and I am just now getting around to posting the pictures. Well, here they are!
Don’t give me that “who’s Jen” stuff, either. If you don’t know her personally, you’ve seen her at shows. Seriously, this chick goes to more shows than even us music blog types. She’ll be the one near the front of the stage, taking pictures with a point & shoot digital camera.
Jen celebrated her birthday in style at Beauty Bar with musical help from Ideal Soul Mart, STEREO IS A LIE, and Buttercup. Beauty Bar was hopping that night, as they were hosting Learning Secrets 6 year anniversary party at the same time.
From TwoGroove with love: Happy Birthday, Jen!
Here are the pics, feel free to grab them and post them to Facebook or whatever.

Knuckle Rumbler knows how to throw down. Expect Beauty Bar to fill up quickly tonight!
Here’s the info:
Knuckle Rumbler is matching wits with the Austinist’s most congenial music journalist to give your ears a cornucopia of sounds to vibe to. Bouncing from the 60s to 80s to whatever is in Prince Klassen’s grab bag of vinyl tricks, the night is sure to give everyone something they can appreciate, sing along to or just get dirty to on the dance floor.
How are we going to achieve this? With Jimi Hendrix , ZZ Top, and Queen! Repping each legendary artist are tremendous bands. Stonefree Experience (Jimi) , Cheap Sunglasses (ZZ), and Magnifico (Queen) are completely on top of their tribute game. Get ready to hear Bohemian Rhapsody, Sharp Dressed Man, and Purple Haze. In addition we will have Prince Klassen on the turn tables to fill in the gaps and keep the
inside party bumpin.
In true Knuckle Rumbler fashion we will have Alison Narro running a rock n roll photo booth so you can prove to your parents the next day that you saw Jimi and Freddie Mercury on the same Beauty Bar stage. And if you are super thirsty, come early and enjoy complimentary beverage or four with Adi courtesy of Birds Barbershop. Other invited but unconfirmed guests include Mama Cass, Jim Morrison, Buddy Holly, Jerry Garcia, Janis Joplin, Brett Michaels’ career, John Lennon, and the drummer of Spinal Tap.

I’ve got good news and even better news. For this Thursday’s event at Beauty Bar, in addition to great music, free Treaty Oak rum starting at 10pm, and the famous Trevor Ray Thompson photobooth:
- There will be no cover from 9-10pm. Get there early, get in free. Candi and the Strangers will be kicking things off once doors open!
- Frantic Clam will be giving away their new EP. Yep, for everyone that wants one, Frantic Clam will give you a download card so you can download the 3-song teaser EP for free.
- TwoGroove will be giving away CDs. In the year TwoGroove has been around, we’ve amassed a good deal of CDs from emerging artists and local bands. I’ll be giving those away; just check the tables outside Beauty Bar (and maybe a few at the bar itself) for the freebies.
- DJ Czech One will turn the event into a dance party after 12:45am. Stick around to hear hot indie and electro tracks. I guarantee you’ll want to dance.
RSVP over at Do512.com for $3 entry ($5 at the door) or get there between 9-10pm and get in free. We’ve got a lot of rum, but expect it to run dry. Get there early to get your fill! And be sure to stop by and say hi to Trevor Ray Thompson at his photobooth, we’ll repost the best pictures here.
See you this Thursday!

It’s the small weeknight shows that give Austin much of it’s musical character. They are annoying gigs for small local bands, but as a music fan, I love that I can go out on a Tuesday night and see promising musicians. These shows allow musicians time to hone their craft and pay their dues. Last night was an interesting night of rock n’ roll, art rock, and technical problems.
The Seas started off the night a little later than expected and played a good set to a medium-sized, but lively crowd. The Seas’ sound fits the Beauty Bar scene well, with it’s blend of art rock and “neo-soul” vocals. I’d argue that there is a dash of The B-52s in there as well.

DJ Czech One kept the night going as The Seas broke down their gear, spinning a mix of rock n’ roll tunes. It was good he was there; Frantic Clam had an amp fail just before sound check. Luckily, and this is another reason I like the small shows, the bassist from The Seas was able to provide his amp.
Well there’s yer problem.
Once the amp situation was all sorted out, Frantic Clam took the stage a little after midnight. Despite the efforts of DJ Czech One, the crowd thinned. While the music was great, the luck wasn’t. Broken strings, shifting music levels (at one point in a song the keyboard track went silent), and a faulty microphone stand did their best to wear away the Clam’s resolve. It didn’t work.
So Austinites, buck up and go out on a week night or two. Sure we’ve got work or school in the morning, but there is music to be had!
For example, you could check out Homegrown Live tonight and check out the scoundrels of Bankrupt and the Borrowers.
