Show Report: Infected Mushroom at Republic Live

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

So last Thursday I am at work, minding my own business, when Mike from NightCulture sends me a text asking if I would cover the Infected Mushroom show that night at Republic Live. Before that text, my night only had the potential to be mostly awesome (the default setting). After, it was headed into “totally” territory. For you see, I am a giant electronic music dork and I freaking love Infected Mushroom.

For the uninitiated: Infected Mushroom was an Israeli psy-trance duo, much the way Pendulum was a drum n’ bass DJ duo. Both groups added live instrumentation to the mix and started playing rock heavily influenced by their previous DJ experience. Both groups still go on DJ tours, but it’s the live show you really need to see.

Infected Mushroom made Republic Live the Austin stop on their US tour, joined by locals Randy Seidman, DJ Exceed and Mike Cherches. So, without further ado, here’s The Good, The Bad, and the Funny (below the break). Check the bottom of the post for a set of pictures, including a good one of the huge, creepy mushroom that was on stage!

A review of MOG All Access

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

MOG recently launched their own streaming music service called MOG All Access to compete with the likes of Pandora and Spotify. For a small fee, MOG puts millions of tracks, both indie and major label,  at your fingertips. You can create playlists of your favorite songs and albums and listen to them ad-free, without having to download any software. Click here for an overview.

Full disclosure here: TwoGroove is a member of the MOG Music Network, a network of music blogs across the world. TwoGroove gets a free subscription to MOG All Access and MOG’s ad network populates the banner ad here, but they do not inform any of our content.

Ok now that’s out of the way, let’s talk about MOG All Access. Be warned: this is a long post.

Show Report and Pictures: Mega Buzz

Monday, December 7th, 2009

Mega Buzz, presented by Massive Intent

Just after Thanksgiving, Massive Intent held its latest rave at the Travis County Expo Center. Mega Buzz was a massive electronic music event featuring music from some top-notch acts including The Glitch Mob, Above & Beyond, and Christoper Lawrence, as well as a laundry list of local DJ talent. From turntablism to trance, almost all genres were represented by the enormous host of DJs that took turns on the various stages.

As usual, TwoGroove was there to cover the event. The show report below is followed by a small gallery of pictures of some of the DJs and performers. A separate gallery of the crowd will come soon.

Show Report: Hotel Hotel, Chief Rival, and Mother Falcon

Monday, November 30th, 2009

101x_logo_posterThe day before Thanksgiving was not the biggest night to go out that Austin has ever seen. Most sensible people were either traveling or at home resting their stomaches for the gluttony to come. Most, but not all.

Wednesday night was 101x Homegrown Live with Mother Falcon, Chief Rival and Hotel Hotel over at Mohawk. You wouldn’t have known it was a Wednesday night (and certainly not the day before Thanksgiving) after walking into the place. I took my sister, who was visiting from Kansas, and totally rediscovered my love of going to shows where the goal is to listen to good music, not see and be seen. When we arrived, the inside stage area was completely full with people spilling out into the bar, there to see Mother Falcon. This large group of classically trained students played a quiet set that enthralled the crowd. I was there for the tail end of the set, had never heard of them, and am now pining for more.

Chief Rival took the stage next and we were able to squeeze closer to the stage.  Granted at this point I had noticed that almost everyone in the place had big black X’s across the backs of their hands, I wasn’t expecting much. Call me jaded but when I see that the band and audience’s average age is 19, I start to lose hope. I instantly think of the drummer kid that lives next door to me, who works daily to play the drums as fast as he can without regard for quality. My worries were completely unfounded. Chief Rival blew me away, with music I can only describe as an electrical storm in the desert. Cheesy imagery sure, but it fit the rambling rock sound and I was hooked.

Hotel Hotel took the clean-up spot and got rolling around 11pm. Another interesting ensemble, they had guitar, drums, a keyboard, and a violin. Their sound is ethereal, post-rock and without vocals. Sort of a This Will Destroy You without the strong emo overtones. It’s a tough sound to describe, but it was thoroughly enjoyable. They will be playing on December 5th with Chief Rival and Persian Wars at Hole in the Wall. I strongly recommend this show!

Check out pictures of the show (including a flattering shot of me and my sister) from David Weaver of The A-List here.

Show Report: Bad Boy Bill at Republic Live

Saturday, September 12th, 2009

Making his Austin tour stop, internationally known house DJ Bad Boy Bill took to the stage Friday night at Republic Live. While electronic music struggles in the US, you never would have known it on Friday. The venue, which holds 700, was overflowing with an eclectic crowd and thundering house music.

The full report, including some funny moments is below the break. A small gallery of pictures is at the bottom of the post.
