Today’s Past, Present, Future comes to you all the way from Wiesbaden, Germany. The Sharpest Sword is a “futuristic 80s electropop” duo, who just released their debut album late last year. While the music is very much electronic in nature, Stephanie Puchala’s relaxed vocals are what really give The Sharpest Sword their personality. Her vocal style is cold and unemotional, complementing the sparse, dystopian beats. The combination creates some fantastic, yet haunting, electro music.
The Sharpest Sword hosts monthly remix contests. They make the stems of their songs available to DJs and producers, so if that’s your thing, go for it!
Check out our short interview with the duo, and be on the lookout for a link to some free downloads!

1. Past: What is your musical background? What has led you to this point?
Stephanie: I was formally trained on the flute and piano while growing up in school, but I always preferred to sing. I just never thought I was that good of a singer. Even so, when I was in my mid-twenties, I felt like I was ready to start writing songs and to get back into music. It’s just something I felt compelled to do. Now the flood gates are open, and I don’t think I’m going to be able to stop. But that’s a good thing.
I enjoy writing songs with Daniel, because we’ve known each other for a long time, so I think that we can sometimes read each others thoughts. This is a good thing, in my opinion, when you’re co-writing music with someone.
Daniel: A lifetime of musical experimentation. My prior musical experiences have been with a Led Zeppelin cover band, several percussion ensembles, some jazz groups, and some heavy rock/industrial sort of bands all of which were quite informative in one way or another. As a percussionist I have done a lot of beat writing over the years, as well as sampling and sequencing stuff together. This often results in very quirky electronic grooves which obviously come through with my contribution to this new style of sound that we are developing for The Sharpest Sword. So in a sense, it’s just part of the progression.
2. Present: Where are you at now in your career? What are you currently working on?
We digitally released our first album on 11.11.2009, and we are currently rehearsing with a live band for our upcoming tours in 2010. In addition, we are refining our style and considering where we want to go, in terms of songwriting, in the future. We are always working on new material.
3. Future: What’s coming up for you? Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
We plan to tour in Europe during 2010 to support the release of our debut album. Within the next 5 years, we plan to release 1 or 2 more albums and continue to tour extensively around the world.
4. Where can people find more of your music?
5. Anything you’d like to plug?
- 11.11.2009: Digital Release of our debut album Devolve To Evolve.
(The physical CD release of the album is scheduled for Spring 2010.)
We are hosting monthly remix contests. Stems for our current contest, which ends on Feb 1, 2010, are available on Soundcloud.com
