Back from vacation and starting off my week with Inner Frequency, a Dallas band led by the southern rock vocal stylings of Cara Young. The best way I can describe the music is that it is rhythmic southern rock with a dash of hip hop and country. Confused? Don’t be; just check them out.

Members/Instruments:
Cara Young – Vocals
Barry Dyer– Electric Guitar
Brad Brock – Bass Guitar
Jon Mosig – Drums, Keys, Programming
Year Formed: 2005
1.Past: What is your musical background? What has led you to this point?
Cara: Growing up in a family with a band director/chorus teacher as a father and a piano teacher mother, music was all around me, so I grew up singing, dancing and playing multiple instruments. After pursuing a career working inside the music industry, I became disenchanted with the music biz and completely dropped out for a few years…even cutting off my singing and songwriting. After some encouragement from a few people, including vocal instructor Mark Carroll who had worked with Peggy Lee back in the day, I got back on my musical feet and searched for a partner. I found Luke Carnevale on the internet, looking for someone to work with.
Luke and I began playing open mic nights and singer/songwriter events with him playing acoustic guitar and me singing. We cowrote our songs with him bringing some almost complete songs to the table (including lyrics), me bringing some of the same and then me also writing lyrics over the top of guitar riffs that he would record. After a few months, we decided to name ourselves Inner Frequency and added a bassist and drummer.
In 2006, we recorded our first EP with our original band members, Julie Licata on drums and Bruce Croker on bass. We called it the Lemontree Project, since we recorded it at Lemmontree studios.
In 2007, the band lineup changed, with Jon Mosig becoming our drummer and Brad Brock our bassist. Both are still in the band today. We recorded a few more singles and played gigs constantly from 2007-2008.
In 2008, we recorded our most recent EP, Surge, with producer and engineer Will Hunt, who has worked with Amy Lee of Evanescence, the Burning Hotels, and Odis. Surge changed our sound and our direction, causing us to evolve from an acoustic sound to more of a full, electric sound. This bigger sound required us to add a fifth member on electric guitar, so we brought in Barry Dyer in early 2009.
2.Present: Where are you at now in your career? What are you currently working on?
The band recently saw the departure of co-founding member, Luke Carnevale. After some contemplation, the remaining members decided to continue moving forward as Inner Frequency. We are working on adding a full-time fifth member and still regrouping to some extent, but continuing to book shows and play live in the meantime with some very talented guitarists stepping in for our live shows. With a large set list of original songs still unrecorded, we are waiting until we find that permanent fifth member before returning to the studio to complete our first full-length album.
Highlights of 2009 so far include appearing on Good Morning Texas , playing on festival stages at Deep Ellum Arts Festival and Taste Addison, and contributing our music and energy to Joss Whedon’s charity project Can’t Stop the Serenity.
3. Future: What’s coming up for you? Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Inner Frequency has been through many periods of change and evolution. This current period of change has been the most dramatic, with the departure of one of the founding members of the group, but it also opens things up for us to really redefine ourselves and prepare to move in a new direction. We are regrouping to be more of a full-out electric band, with two electric guitar players instead of an acoustic and an electric. Once we add that permanent fifth member, we will push to the next level.
In five years, Inner Frequency will be on the national stage, playing shows at venues such as the House of Blues and playing major festivals. We have commercially appealing and relevant tunes, we have the drive and we are ready to make it onto the national scene.
