Originally from Omaha, 311 has gone through quite an evolution since I was first introduced to them in 1993. I can’t say I am a big fan of their post-Transistor work, but I’ve always liked the group. They’ll be at Austin Music Hall along with Full Service tonight, tickets are still available.
If you haven’t had a chance to check out the earlier 311 albums, especially Music and Grassroots, you are missing out on some great stuff there. They blazed a trail, among other things, for the eventual fusion of rap and metal. The early works showed 311 at their best: under-produced and full of energy. They hadn’t made it to the big leagues yet, despite their signing to Capricorn Records, and the music has a decidely raw quality to it. Run over to Waterloo and pick up Music or Grassroots, you won’t be dissapointed.
