Austin Town Hall put on a great show last night at Mohawk. The Great Nostalgic, Frantic Clam, Whitman, and The Bubbles took turns filling up the inside room at Mohawk. Each group brought something unique to the night; a credit to Austin Town Hall for putting the line-up together. Read our quick report on the night and then check out the pictures below.
The Great Nostalgic started the night off right. This group is fairly new to the scene, but are rising through the ranks quickly. The recently released their self-titled debut album and are heading out on an East Coast tour in May. Read ATH’s review of their album here and you’ll see why they are rising stars. I’m hoping to get my grubby hands on a copy for review shortly.
Frantic Clam brought their usual energy and “strangled indie” sound. This group has grown up a lot over the past few months, evidenced by their inclusion of the new track “Dangerous”, a downtempo piano-driven song that contrasts nicely with lighter, high-energy tracks like “Korean Beauty Queen”.
Whitman riled up the crowd and cranked up the energy level. Frontman Ram stomped about the stage while the crowd rocked out to their brand of progressive bar rock. Like Bankrupt and the Borrowers and Rook, Whitman makes you want to raise your glass and shout the lyrics. There is nothing low-key about Whitman.
The Bubbles rounded out the night with their power pop stylings. This group gets judged quickly before they start playing due to their young age and colorful style. Plus, they started the show running around the venue singing “We are The Bubbles! We go pop pop!”. Once the whole group is back on stage, they impressed the crowd (who stuck around late on a school night!) with their suprising maturity, both in their demeanor and sound.
